Technical notes from Statik:

These 2 Special Edition releases started from a fairly simple idea…to see what mixing our songs in 5.1 Surround would be like. Little did we know what a journey that simple idea would take us on.

A lot of our songs are very dense, and I always wanted to try something that would really spread out the sound, and let listeners experience the songs in a completely new way. In order to make true surround mixes, I had to bring up the songs in the studio, which at this point was easier said than done. Most of these songs were started before the idea of mixing “in the box” or just on a computer was possible. Technically, some were started on a Mac Clone running Studio Vision Software, and later transferred to Pro Tools, and sometimes ADAT tapes. At the time they were then mixed out to a 32 channel console. These were mixes that I couldn’t just press a button and bring up. I had all of the main audio tracks transferred into my computer, in a Pro Tools Session, but there was still a lot missing! Most of the effects weren’t there, and all of the various mix routing, levels, and a lot of what I had going on in the mixes was no longer available to me. I wanted to keep everything that really made these songs special, so after buying a couple of new Digidesign Cards, and an old interface on Ebay, I was able to get my 20 year old computer running with a 20 year old version of Pro Tools. This enabled me to bounce down the missing tracks and effects, and see exactly what was going on in the original sessions. At the time when we made these albums, just buying huge hard drives really wasn’t an option, and having lots of tracks play at once from your computer was a major ordeal. It was a lot of work to get all of the tracks into a new format that I could work in, and I believe that the whole process made everything sound better in the end. I now had the sessions in their complete format, and I was able to run the audio through much better converters. Besides just being able to mix the songs in surround, I really started to think that most of these new (stereo) mixes were sounding better than the originals. So we are including the new stereo mixes, as well as the new surround, and instrumental mixes on the Blu Ray disc. For those that want it, of course we included all of the mixes included in the original CD release as well.

While we were on this path, of retrieving all of the files and songs, we went through all of our ADAT tapes, old reference CDs, and old Pro Tools Sessions that we had. Luckily we were pretty good about keeping everything. As we are in the song writing process, songs (of course) go through a lot of changes. In going through all of these tapes, and sessions, it was really interesting after so much time has passed, to hear early versions of the songs, where kaRIN has totally different lyrics, or lyrics that are still being worked out…or where the music was mostly there, but far from its final polished form. I know that (for me) versions like these are always interesting to hear, especially for songs that I really know and like.

The other great part of going through all of these sessions, was running across songs or song ideas that were never finished. It was great to be able to work with these ideas from so long ago. I was able to bring these into my current set up and give them all new mixes! We kept all of the vocals as they were though. It was like finding bits of audio treasure.

Finally, as all of these mixes were getting finished, we really had to think about the best way to release everything. CDs are fine, but it would have taken 5 or 6 cds to fit everything for each release!! and even then, of course, we couldn’t have put the surround mixes there, and the audio specs of cds, are lower than we were mixing and recording in, and we wanted everyone to really experience these albums in the best way possible. Although DVDs were another option, the Surround Mixes would have been compressed, and we still couldn’t fit everything we wanted to on a single DVD. So the best option for ultimate sound quality was Blu Ray discs. Although Blu Rays never took off, they are still around, and playable in dedicated players, as well as Playstations, and X-Box machines. The amount of audio that is able to put on a disc, and being able to have it in high resolution, uncompressed audio, in both stereo, and DTS Master Audio for surround sold us as ultimately the best sound experience that we could offer!

Statik just finished 2 remixes for the band Beauty in Chaos for their upcoming remix album ”Beauty Re-envisioned” out either March or April.

The first remix was for the song "20th Century Boy", and features Al Jourgensen on vocals.

The second song was “Un-Natural Disaster”. This song features dUg Pinnick (King’s X) and ICE-T (Body Count)! and Pete Parade (The Offspring) on drums, with a new solo by Zakk Wylde who just came off the road with Ozzy!

Both remixes turned out great, and if all goes well, they will be using the Collide remix of “Un-Natural Disaster” for the first video for their upcoming remix album.

A Model of Control has picked Mind + Matter for their 2018 Best of List

It has become pretty much expected that Collide will release a remix album after each album nowadays – but what is remarkable to me is just how good each of them are. Collide have a very distinct style – guitar-assisted industrial darkwave with Karin’s ethereal vocals floating across the mix – so what is often obvious is that a desire to do something different really brings out the best in the remixers. Their smart habit of opening out the remixes to pretty much anyone that wants to do them – which often includes amateur musicians who might be just fans of the band – also means that there is an amazing variety in the output, and it also does the additional service of giving a “leg up” to these smaller artists, too. That said, there are certain moments worthy of particular note, particularly the Blue Stahli rework of Freaks Me Out, whose savage, anthemic take is easily the best Collide remix released since Vortex fourteen years ago.

We love hearing all the different takes on our songs, and were honored that so many people wanted to take part in the remixing of Color of Nothing.

After a lot of listening and more listening, we have the list of winners to our recent remix contest.

There was more competition than ever this time around, and the competition was fierce. All of the remixes will appear on our upcoming double remix album. We also have some special songs of our own that will be on the album, as well as some other special remixers that we will be announcing later!

Carpe Nocturne reviews Color of Nothing

We're not sure why some of the reviews have taken so long to come out after our album release, but we're happy that they here at all.  It seems like we're still doing something right.  Here's the review.  Thanks to Sergio Manghina for sending it to us.

 

Twenty-five years of excellent music under the name Collide, and an interesting side project called The Secret Meeting with Dean Garcia of Curve, kaRIN and Statik have always had a completely different, personal vision or idea about what being “goth” with all its nuances really means.  Their sonic territory is an electronic dark wave with  distinctly industrial implications.  But, at the same time, something impalpable unequivocally distinguishes them from any other.  “Color of Nothing” is a further evidence of it.  

The backbone of this new album has a temperate dark-industrial feel, where the suavity of kaRIN is the gentle counterpoint of the robust implant of synths and drums impeccably performed by Statik.  Sharply guitars characterize several episodes.  “Wake Up” and “Soul Crush” are heavy, cutting songs, floating into an amniotic liquid of electronics.  “Freaks Me Out” and “Fix” levitates into different spectrums, but both can invoke multi-color psychedelic trips.  “Will Not Be Destroyed” is touched by some shades of noir while “Blurring the Edges” is romantic-arcane trip-hop.  However, each song of this work gets its own place on the palette of imagination until “Pale Blue”, which closes the album with a slightly different mood.  Decelerating, it dulls the tones like  a cozy refuge.  kaRIN’s voice encloses a sonic prism of sensation, between the beauty of a snow-crystal and a mysterious sensuality.

kaRIN and Statik are architects of complex songs, conceived as micro-worlds made of sounds.  They write incredibly intelligent, and enjoyable music.  Collide offers a very accurate production in all details, including the beautiful lyrics and imagery.

"I was rather astounded to realize just how long Collide have been part of the scene this year. Now an active group for around two decades, they’ve avoided trends as such as simply continued with their own style to great effect, as this new album proves. Their best album in some years, this keeps the quasi-ethereal/industrial/darkwave sound that they perfected long-since, but here it seems to have rather more bite than it has of late. With dense instrumentation, great songs and a heavier take on their sound that sees guitars used as texture as much as the synths to add the extra heft, this is a fascinating album well worth luxuriating in, and those two decades into their career, Collide remain an endlessly enjoyable band."

'Color of Nothing' is Collide's 8th studio album and their first one in six years following 'Counting to Zero' in 2011. That album was a rather downtempo, melancholy affair that although well-executed, largely lacked the fire that they exhibited on 'Two Headed Monster' from 2008. There's fire aplenty though in 'Color of Nothing' and it begins with the aptly titled "Wake Up". If Collide's fans thought they had lost some of their industrial edge previously, I can tell you that it's back in full force now. The harder edge here is provided by the guitars of Kevin Kipnis (Purr Machine) and Scott Landes. Statik is still handling programming (electronics, percussion) and kaRIN has never sounded more seductively witchy. Something about the ways her voice was recorded on this album is really different. She is still immediately recognizable but there are places where her vocals are elusive as smoke. Statik incorporates a lot of melodic/rhythmic industrial loops on this album, perhaps more than he's ever used before. Where Collide had once flirted with taking over the mantle of the 90's band Curve (ie; The Secret Meeting - 'Ultrashiver') here on 'Color of Nothing' they do so forcefully and unapologetically. They even invited Dean Garcia back again to play bass on a track ("Fix"). This is a bigger, bolder and heavier album than they've ever done before. Although there's no definitive unified concept here, this is one of those albums that plays best as a whole rather than trying to pick some hit song, of which there isn't really one here. They're all good. Even though it took me a while to really get into 'Color of Nothing' it was worth it, and I think Collide's fans will think so too. It's an album that could only have been put out by a goth-industrial outfit of the calibre of Collide, and was worth the wait. I can only hope they'll feel like touring it.

Things are moving along and we are so excited to be getting closer! Here is a look at the new cover!

We decided to call it Color of Nothing.

Mixing is now done and we are in the mastering stage!! We are on target for a May 25th release!!!

We are a completely self funded band and thanks to everyone that has pledged so far...this album has been made possible because of you!! We are eternally grateful!

Okay you super wonderful people…with your help we did it!!!

We are deeply grateful to each and every one of you for wanting to be part of our musical journey!!

To us making music is like our own personal art piece, and each detail and every sound is important. It is our labor of love and requires hundreds and hundreds of hours of time to make something that we are happy enough to let go of.

The fact that we have now made this goal will now help us pay for the album expenses, and tells us that people still do care enough about our music to be supportive, which means everything to us!

Currently, we are just beginning the mixing stage which should take a couple of weeks, after which time we will get the album mastered. We are still working on album artwork, and deciding on a title for the album. Hopefully that will be revealed in one of our next updates =). There are 11 songs, we can tell you that!!

We're excited to announce that we're launching a new PledgeMusic campaign for our new album. 

In the coming months, on our PledgeMusic site, we'll be posting news, and exclusive behind the scenes videos of what goes into finish the album.  On the site, you can pledge to see all of that, and receive a download of the album when it is finished.  Of course there are lots of other special items there, so check it out.

We are hoping for a May 2017 release.  We didn't want to say too much about it, until we were a little closer to being finished, but we are in the final stages.  We just have to finish vocals and a couple of songs, and then we will be working on artwork and mixing.
